Additions: Remodeling to Fit Your Growing Needs

There are a lot of reasons our clients choose to add square footage to their homes rather than move to something larger — they love their neighborhoods, their communities and everything else about their homes despite the limitations. Adding an extra bedroom, a porch, an office, a family room or a studio above the garage can be an affordable alternative to selling and buying in today’s market.

Are you experiencing growing pains of your own? Ask us how we can add more space to your home without having to give up the things you enjoy most.

The Homeowner

Jeff and Heidi knew they wanted to add a screen porch to their 1998 Blaine home. They ended up with not just a screen porch, but a wrap-around deck, a new home office, an enlarged lower level with plenty of play space and new bedrooms for their growing family. With the help of Brunn Remodeling, they transformed the home they loved into their dream home.

The Challenge

The first challenge presented itself when the family wanted to re-use the existing door from the dining area to the new porch. Looking over the original house plans, Andy Brunn discovered the door was not where it was on the plans, so he needed to make some quick adjustments.

Another problem involved an open banister on the upstairs landing and plumbing that needed to reach the upstairs bedrooms. Andy solved the problem by designing a half wall next to the stairway. Pillars hide the pipes and provide visual interest for a comfortable sitting area.

More Solutions

Creating the screen porch offered the opportunity to expand off the living room. A new office was built, providing work and play space. Pocket doors slide shut when Heidi gives piano lessons in the living room.

With the unused space under the office, we bumped out the basement for added play areas for the kids as well as room for Jeff to store his percussion equipment when he’s not playing in his music groups.

The project was started in January and completed by mid-April — just in time to open up the doors and listen to the peeper frogs in the wetlands that border their property.

It doesn't look like a remodel

“We needed the extra room and considered moving — but we loved our house and our neighborhood. We looked at the cost to build our dream home, and it was better to remodel. We held a birthday/housewarming party upon completion and one of our neighbors said, ‘It doesn’t look like a remodel.’ It really is our dream home.”

"It was absolutely worth while. We like our neighborhood and our neighbors. There were quirks with the home and we knew what they were. Brunn helped us figure out how to solve those quirks and now it feels good when we have a larger kitchen for entertaining and have nice spaces for our family to go and enjoy — including a playroom for the kids."
